Communications Manager

We are seeking a talented Communications Manager to work as a key member of our highly collaborative, high performing Marketing and Communications team.

CSMLS proudly serves as the national professional society for Canada’s medical laboratory professionals and the national certifying body for medical laboratory technologists and medical laboratory assistants. We are a not-for-profit organization that is funded entirely by membership dues and revenues from goods and services provided to our membership and the laboratory community at large.

About the Position
Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, you are a trusted advisor to the entire organization, but your focus is leading a series of communications programs and initiatives that shape the membership experience and deliver significant value to our members. As Communications Manager you have two direct reports and work with several external service providers to help the Society reach strategic and operational goals.

Your responsibilities will include:
Overseeing Communications Vehicles
• Develop editorial plans and coordinate the production of a quarterly print magazine
• Manage a bi-weekly email newsletter that strategically highlights key membership news and information
• Develop and execute strategies for growing and leveraging our social media channels
• Identify and cultivate relationships with potential content creators and subject matter experts
• Craft messaging on behalf of the CEO, President and Board members for public and member-facing communications
 
Media/Public Relations
• Oversees media monitoring process, escalates and provides advice on proactive media responses, supports leadership in media responses, press releases and conferences
• Makes recommendations to the Director, Marketing & Communications to increase CSMLS’s media and public profile
• Participates in lobbying activities and representing CSMLS and the membership

Public Awareness Campaigns
• Serves as the project and creative lead for National Medical Laboratory Week
• Develops new projects to raise the public profile of our membership
 
Administration:
• Manages the performance of the Marketing & Communications Associate & Web Developer
• Creates, monitors and executes the communications budget
• Aids in the development of annual operational strategies/goals
• Continually evaluates CSMLS’s communications programs; recognizing opportunities for improvement in processes, and materials, and implementing changes as required
• Facilitates brainstorming ideas for new campaigns, strategies, and initiatives
• Supports the Director, Marketing & Communications as required
 
What you bring:
• College diploma or university degree in marketing, communications, public relations, or a related field with 3-5 years of relevant experience
• Expert interpersonal and communications (written and verbal) skills
• Strong organizational and project management skills
• Expert ability to prioritize your own and your staff’s work
• Expert writing skills for multiple media forms
• Experience with the production of print materials
• Experience executing integrated marketing and communications campaigns, including video, print, and web components
• Highly motivated individual with a collaborative approach to work
• Experience coaching and leading others
• Ability to work independently and part of a team
• Experience in the non-for-profit sector and bilingualism is an asset
 
This position is permanent, full time 37.5 hours per week.
We are a small, close knit organization with 23 full time staff.
As an organization we operate in a hybrid model, with a combination of in-office days and some working-from-home days once initial onboarding is completed.

Full-time, in-office work is expected during initial training and onboarding.

We offer:
Starting salary $53,000-59,000 commensurate with the position & the successful candidate’s experience and education.
