Learning Outcomes:
•Describe briefly the endocrine and exocrine functions of the pancreas.
•Define the term pancreatitis.
•Describe the etiology of pancreatitis.
•List some of the pre-disposing situations that appear to be involved with pancreatitis.
•Describe the presenting features of acute pancreatitis.
•Discuss the major differences between acute and chronic pancreatitis.
•Discuss the relative merits of the serum amylase and serum lipase tests.
•Define incidence, prevalence, macroamylase and macrolipase as related to pancreatitis.
•Outline why measurement of trypsinogen II is potentially a good test for making a rapid diagnosis of acute pancreatitis.
•Describe the difference between invasive tube tests compared to the tubeless tests.
•Tabulate the statistical properties of the important tests used in the evaluation of pancreatitis and pancreatic function.
