Metabolic Diseases Of The Liver

 Metabolic Diseases of the Liver (9883-11) Review the basic anatomy, physiology and function of the liver. This basic course also describes common laboratory tests that are used to measure liver function and to assess the degree of damage to the liver.

Learning Outcomes:
•     Describe the location, gross structure and microstructure of the liver
•     Draw a schematic of the structure of the liver
•     Discuss in detail the primary functions of the liver
•     Describe what is understood by the term “liver function tests”
•     List the laboratory tests that measure liver function
•     Describe the tests that assess the degree of liver damage
•     List four hereditary metabolic disorders of the liver
•     Describe the features of Wilson’s disease, Menke’s disease, Alpha-1- antitrypsin deficiency and hemochromatosis
•     Describe in some detail the clinical features and pathogenesis of this group of diseases
•     Explain in brief terms the common molecular mutations for this group of diseases
•     Describe in detail the laboratory tests used to identify this group of diseases
•     Review the pathological processes involved with these hereditary metabolic diseases of the liver
•     Discuss the current thinking regarding screening the well population for hemochromatosis
