Managing Spurious Qualitative Results In Hematology

Managing Spurious Qualitative Results in Hematology (9878-09) Explore many of the ways spurious results may occur and the means to eliminate them. Most of these errors will be recognized and flagged by the instruments and their built in warning systems. There are, however, many potential pitfalls that can lead to reporting spurious laboratory results. Laboratory staff must be aware of these and know how to recognize and correct them.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify and recognize spurious laboratory results promptly if they occur.
  • Identify and classify spurious results and give examples of both qualitative and qualitative errors
  • Tabulate the common errors that result from a pseudo increase or decrease in the value of common hematological measurements.
  • Identify the specific morphological features that indicate the cause of certain quantitative spurious results.
  • Outline the approach to minimize the errors caused by cold agglutinins.
  • Explain how calculated hematological indices are able to help identify errors in other test results.
  • Describe some of the more specific and common qualitative causes of spurious hematological test results.
  • List some of the common morphological abnormalities that are the cause of errors in instrument results.
  • Explain the limitations of the 100 cell differential count.
  • Describe the general approach to determining the cause of test results that do not appear to be in agreement with expected results in a given clinical condition.
  • Recognize the errors that result from delay in testing.
  • Understand the reasons that differential counts should not be performed on buffy count films.
