Fibrinolysis

Fibrinolysis (9841-08) Build upon your knowledge of the hemostasis system as you consider the fibrinolytic system. Learn how this system lyses unwanted clots and becomes involved with the process of healing. Examine how the fibrinolytic system depends on appropriate activation, production of peptides and action of enzymes in order to function. Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is discussed in terms of common "trigger" mechanisms and laboratory findings, as well as the use of agents in therapeutic fibrinolysis.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the role of fibrinolysis in hemostasis
  • List the components, with their properties, functionally involved with fibrinolysis
  • Briefly describe the role of fibrinolysis and the metalloprotein matrix
  • Describe the properties of plasminogen activators
  • Explain the function of plasmin and its production from plasminogen
  • Tabulate the properties of plasminogen inhibitors
  • Outline the features of hyperfibrinolytic states
  • Describe the clinical entity of DIC and its common trigger mechanisms
  • Discuss the laboratory findings of DIC
  • Describe the role of antithrombin III both as an inhibitor and its role with heparin therapy
  • Describe how fibrinogen is affected by thrombin and broken down by plasmin to form FDP
  • Outline the use of agents used in therapeutic fibrinolysis
